Glasshouse Orchard Summer

Apple blossom is present for nearly 2 months as the 6 varieties of cider apple are spread throughout the site. Bee hives have been placed along the Eastern hedge to take advantage of this bounty for a local bee-keeper. A swarm was once found in a tree the night before hay making was due to start, causing a slight panic for the tractor driver!

The hay meadow grows rapidly through early summer with a succession of orchids, Green winged followed by Common spotted and in the last two years, Bee orchid. Yellow rattle is abundant and adds to the rich herbal mix found in the hay when it is cut and baled in mid-July.
